| The Dumfries Office of Gillespie Gifford & Brown has been a solicitor's office since the mid-Eighteenth Century. Formerly Messrs McGowans until its amalgamation with Messrs Gillespie Gifford & Brown, in 1993, the history of the firm of McGowans can be traced as far back as the 1870's.
Two brothers, T & J McGowan Solicitors parted company in 1876 and the firm of J H McGowan and Son was set up and practiced until the First World War. Thereafter, James Bryden was assumed as a partner and the firm continued to practice under the name of J H McGowan Son and Bryden, until 1975 when the firm became known as Messrs McGowans. At that time the two resident partners were David Kellar and Kenneth Ross.
David Kellar retired in 1992, and Kenneth Ross left the firm in 1997 and is now Sheriff sitting on the bench at Dumfries and Kirkcudbright Sheriff Courts.
In 1980 the firm of Messrs McGowans assumed J & C M Hyslop and continued to practice under the name of Messrs McGowans until its amalgamation in 1993 with Gillespie Gifford & Brown.
