| Centrally situated in the historic harbour and county town of Kirkcudbright, our Office has occupied its present characterful corner site since the late 1960's. However, the firm has been part of the Kirkcudbright legal scene for a century, tracing its origins here to Col. Adam Brown.
In 1892, aged only 26, Adam Brown accepted an appointment as the County Clerk and Treasurer with the County Council of the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright. As was common at that time, he also practised on his own account, building a much respected and comprehensive private client practice.
An active member of what became the Territorial Army, Adam served in World War 1, rising to command a Brigade and attaining the rank of Colonel.
The father of three children, he was associated with his son, Andrew C. Brown, in the private client part of his business, father and son forming the subsequently long established firm of Adam & A.C.Brown, Solicitors, Kirkcudbright.
Adam Brown died in February 1933, and thereafter the business of Adam & A.C.Brown was continued by his son, and, in later years, by others.
Gavin Scott, the current resident Partner at the Kirkcudbright Office of Gillespie Gifford & Brown, joined the former firm of Adam & A.C.Brown in 1983 as an Assistant Solicitor, being appointed as a Partner towards the end of the following year.
In 1987, there took place the amalgamation between Adam & A.C.Brown of Kirkcudbright and the then relatively recently created firm of Gillespie & Gifford of Castle Douglas.
